Giant Seafloor Depressions Caused by Slope Failures and Bottom Currents on the Namibia Continental Margin

چکیده
More than 100 circular, elongate or crescent-shaped very large seafloor depressions were found on the southern Namibian continental margin in water depths between 900 and 1700 m. These show extraordinary sizes of up to 3 km diameter 180 m depth. Multichannel seismic bathymetric data influence bottom currents their morphology through prograding infills upcurrent erosion downcurrent flanks, thus creating a crescent largest depressions. Although resembles pockmarks related fluid seepage, no indications for an active flow system observed area. Some extensive underlying cut-and-fill sequences that could be traced down slope failure structures deposits at A correlation ODP drill site 1085 indicates continuous development ∼10 Ma, documented by successive stages infilling, size variations. Analysis reflection suggests these formed interaction with existing morphology. The equilibrium was initially disturbed mass-wasting events, common occurrences region. Subsequently, ongoing sedimentation vicinity affected ocean currents, leading preservation constant re-shaping until recent times. This study highlights ability under bottom-current produce unique features over long geological time scales.

Depositional Turbidity Currents in Diapiric Minibasins on the Continental Slope: Formulation and Theory
The northern continental slope of the Gulf of Mexico is riddled with numerous subsiding diapiric minibasins bounded by ridges, many but not all of which are connected by channels created by turbidity currents. The region is economically relevant in that many of these diapiric minibasins constitute focal points for the deposition of sand. Some of these sandy deposits in turn serve as excellent r...
متن کاملAnalysis of the circulation and shelf-slope exchanges in the continental margin of the northwestern Mediterranean
In this paper, we present the results from a high horizontal resolution numerical simulation of the northwestern Mediterranean using a z-level, non-hydrostatic, primitive equation ocean model (DieCAST). The high resolution allows an accurate representation of the submarine canyons that presides in the region. The model is one-way coupled to a large scale model of the Mediterranean Sea through o...
متن کاملModeling Sedimentary Deposits on the Continental Margin
A first objective is to investigate the fabric (pattern) of seabed stratification on continental margins at small time and space scales (1 cm-50 cm depth into the seabed; 1 hr-3 yrs sedimentary record). To this end, we are testing the hypothesis that on muddy shelves such as the northern California shelf, Holocene event stratigraphy consists of the deposits of high-concentration storm regimes a...
متن کاملSulfate reduction and methane oxidation in continental margin sediments influenced by irrigation (South-East Atlantic off Namibia)
Sulfate reduction rates (SRR) and concentrations of SO4 , H2S, pyrite sulfur, total sulfur, CH4, and organic carbon were measured with high depth resolution through the entire length of the SO4 -zone and well into the CH4-zone at two continental slope stations in the eastern South Atlantic (Benguela upwelling area). The sediments were characterized by a high organic carbon content of approx. 7....
متن کاملSeparation of a midlevel density current from the bottom of a continental slope.
The high-salinity water flowing out of the Mediterranean Sea descends to mid depths in the density-stratified ocean, continues as a narrow jet along the Iberian continental slope, and intermittently detaches large-scale eddies (called "Meddies"). This process is important because it maintains the relatively high mean salinity of a major water mass (the "Mediterranean Intermediate Water") in the...
